The seamless power and natural balance of an inline-6 pair with another Mercedes-Benz tradition: a technological leap ahead. The lightweight, beltless engine's Integrated Starter-Generator can add up to 20 hp electrically, to allow gas-free coasting and recapture energy during deceleration. With a twin-scroll turbo, CAMTRONIC variable valve lift, and friction-reducing NANOSLIDE cylinder walls, the gas engine outputs 375 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque on its own, for smooth, efficient response.
For a balanced, comfortable ride, the AIRMATIC® suspension employs electronically controlled air springs that provide an ideal balance of ride comfort and handling composure. At the push of a button, the vehicle's ride height can be raised for added ground clearance, or lowered at the rear for easier cargo loading. Automatic 4-wheel level control helps compensate for additional cargo or passengers, and can lower at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics, stability and efficiency.
A specially engineered version of 4MATIC® can automatically send from zero to 100% of the engine's torque to either axle, front or rear. A transfer case with a multi-disc clutch can vary the torque distribution based on the driving conditions in the moment. While this allows for precise response to varying surfaces and individual-wheel traction off-road and in inclement weather, it can also enhance handling in any season by favorably influencing the vehicle's rotation.
A selector on the console lets you vary the vehicle's performance character to suit your needs or your mood. DYNAMIC SELECT offers four preset modes: ECO, Comfort, Sport and Off-Road, plus an Individual mode you can personalize. Each mode adapts throttle response, shift points, ESP and more, with Off-Road tailored for dirt, gravel and sand. The AIRMATIC® suspension also adapts the damping rate in the various modes.
An Off-Road dash display can show your steering angle, tilt angle, grade percentage and more, while a clever virtual "Transparent Hood" feature can compose views from the exterior cameras on the display, to show underneath the vehicle at speeds to 5 mph, and the view ahead up to 12 mph.
With a greater range of ratios and shorter steps between gears, the 9-speed automatic changes gears more quickly yet more smoothly. Along with a more seamless delivery of power, the lighter, more versatile transmission enhances quiet riding comfort and fuel-efficiency. A Mercedes-Benz innovation, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control uses radar-based technology to adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows down, it can reduce your speed automatically until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, it can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap of the accelerator or cruise control button, or it can resume automatically if the stop is under 30 seconds.
A Mercedes-Benz first, PRE-SAFE® can detect instability during certain vehicle maneuvers that suggest a collision or rollover is imminent. It can then tighten the front seat belts, adjust the front passenger seat, and close the windows and sunroof, all in an effort to better prepare the occupants and restraints in the moments before a collision. If no accident occurs, the seat-belt tensioners reverse, and you simply readjust your seat, open the sunroof and continue on your way.
An advanced system of 7 air bags offers 11-way occupant protection. Dual two-stage front air bags, front side-impact air bags, a driver's knee air bag, and side curtain air bags for all three seating rows are standard.
Radar-based technology can alert you if you're approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as you start to brake, it can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. If you fail to respond, it can also initiate braking automatically at a range of driving speeds. The system can also help detect and react to crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds.
Pioneered by Mercedes-Benz, active LED headlamps can generate light that's perceived much like natural daylight. Active Curve Illumination and Adaptive Highbeam Assist continuously adjust the beam pattern of the LEDs in each headlamp to help maximize the illumination of corners and straightaways, without creating glare for other drivers. An Ultra Wide Highbeam feature is designed to better illuminate the road and the environment along either side.
At most driving speeds, radar technology can help sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area on either side of you, and alert you by illuminating an icon in the appropriate side mirror. If you activate a turn signal while a vehicle is detected, it can sound a warning tone while a display appears in the instrument cluster. And if you begin to change lanes, advanced active technology can help guide the car back by selectively braking individual wheels.
The 50/50-split 3rd-row seats in the GLS can be individually folded flat in less than five seconds at the touch of a button. When used in combination with the standard power-folding 2nd-row seats, this standard appointment gives you easy access to nearly 85 cu ft of cargo space. A single button in the cargo area lets you fold down all the rear seats with one touch.
The GLS accommodates up to 84.7 cu ft of cargo with the 2nd- and 3rd-row seats folded to create a fully carpeted cargo floor. Floor-mounted tie-downs, side parcel nets, a grocery bag hook, and a 12-volt power outlet add convenience. A button in the cargo area can lower the rear suspension by nearly two inches, for easier loading and unloading.
Heated and ventilated seats are a luxury you'll soon consider a necessity. Three levels of heating and cooling ventilation are offered. By gently circulating air through perforations in the seat and backrest, the seats help keep you cooler and your clothes drier during warmer months. On cold or damp days, using both the ventilation and heating features together can circulate the seat heating more quickly, to help keep you warm and dry.
